Saturday, June 10, 2017, in Aiken, South Carolina, The Aiken Housing Authority served up a morning of fun at its first “Plateful of Summer” to kick off its Summer Food Service Program.
The event, which included bounce houses, face painting and hula-hoop and watermelon-eating contests at Perry Memorial Park, created awareness for the program, which provides nutritious meals to low-income children during the summer months when school is out.
“We provide nutritious meals to children who would not receive those meals during the summer as they would during the school year,” said Chanosha Lawton, deputy director of the Aiken Housing Authority. “The program provides breakfast and a lunch meal to ensure children are receiving nutritious meals during the summer.
